beach bums want to wear sequins, too |style|

I’ve been in a committed relationship with sequins for most of my life. The majority of people save these tiny twinkling beauties for the winter holidays, weddings, prom, or the occasional themed mixer. I, however, am not about that life. I absolutely love how over-the-top sequins are. In the blink of an eye you can be transformed into a shimmering mermaid. For the record, I feel the same way about glitter, but I’ll save that for a later post. Every time I wear sequins, I feel like they are saying “I’m celebrating today & you should too!”

Even if you don’t share my passion for all things sequin, there are a number of ways to make them more wearable. One way is to subtly incorporate them into your wardrobe by way of accessories. Acquiring a sequined clutch or pair of killer sequined flats can go a long way without having to go full on Miss America. I’d also like to reiterate that there isn’t a damn thing wrong with head-to-toe sequins, but I digress. Another method is to find pieces that are more subdued in color. Take the Billabong skirt I have pictured as an example. It still has a distinctive flair but with the olive, bronze, gray, and soft silver tones, it’s easier to wrap your brain around wearing an item like this to the grocery store.

For this look in particular, I juxtaposed the “girly” vibe of the sequins with some badass jewelry. I mixed a stack of bracelets—that reflect my beach bum lifestyle—with shells and stones. I also paired two of my favorite necklaces together (one of which is adorned with a golden bullet) for a layered, laid back feel. Both of the necklaces, the purple stone bracelet, & the evil eye bracelet are all from a brand called Blaine Bowen. Her pieces are of incredible caliber but also with free-spirited, adventure-loving dreamers who will be wearing them in mind. Nothing makes my little heart happier than when quality and creativity come together. This is definitely the essence of Blaine and her gorgeous works of art.

Don’t be afraid to mix it up every once in a while. So pull out that skirt you bought for last year’s Christmas party, and get out there you sequin wearing rebel, you. Why should December have all the fun?  Keep your mind open and eyes peeled for some fun and funky accessories to put a little pizzazz into your ensemble. Spring/summer is also the perfect season to score sequins because they’re usually on sale! Jokes on them though, you wear sequins year around now 😉

Sending lots of love & beach vibes your way!
