I’m very passionate about oversized shirts, they’re one of my wardrobe workhorses, so yes, the fabric matters.
Girl, I know that $29.99 polyester beach shirt on Amazon can feel tempting, but if I could convince you to invest in just ONE thing for vacation, it would be an oversized 100% cotton or 100% linen button-down. It’s the hardest working piece you can pack.
When we went to Palm Springs a couple weeks ago, I wore one of these oversized shirts every 👏🏾 single 👏🏾 day. The same top took me from breakfast to the pool to dinner with just a few simple styling tweaks (like big earrings and slick back bun, simple)
So cool, you love the vibes but you still think the fabric doesn’t reallyyyy matter? I feel you. $29.99 vs $129.99 is a big jump but hear me out, cotton and linen’s natural fibers allow air to circulate, which is going to keep you cool instead of trapping heat against your body like your own personal hellish sauna. When these fabrics wrinkle a little, they also look old money chic. When your polyester shirt wrinkles, it just looks like sh*t.
I’d air dry my shirts post pool & they’d have that perfect relaxed texture & be completely dry in time for dinner.
My opinion solidified after shooting beachwear for so many years. I can’t tell you how many times I’d be mid set, overheating and ready to rip my clothes off, asking “What the f*** is this made out of?!” looking down at the care-tag & reading 100% polyester or acrylic. Absolutely not.
You may also know one of my favorite things to collect is oversized button-down shirts, and almost every single one in my archive is cotton, linen, or silk. Plenty are vintage, which is your reminder that this is a piece you’ll wear for decades, not just a season.
Go for a tropical print, classic stripes or keep it simple with a solid. I reach for my white, blue & pink solid shirts the most.
The brutal Miami heat has taught me plenty of hard lessons but one of the most poignant ones is to invest in natural fabrics.
Anyway, now you know! Xx
