mixing metals in the mountains |style|

In my lifetime of jewelry wearing adventures, I’ve been asked several times, “Wait, you wear gold & silver together?!” Um, yes… yes I do. Don’t get me wrong, I fully understand it can be aesthetically pleasing to wear only one tone of jewelry. But seeing as this has been brought to my attention on multiple occasions, I gather that this may very well be a concept that lots of people have a difficult time wrapping their brain around.

Let me just preface this by saying I’ve always thrown caution to the wind when mixing metals—but the concept was really driven home when I became engaged. You see, several years ago my “go to” ring happened to be a yellow gold piece, which I wore the hell out of. Then one day my sweet man proposed and BAM, I had a brand new white gold engagement ring that I had to figure out how to integrate into my style. I guess what I am really trying to say is that I had no other effing choice but to begin mixing metals. I looove gold, so I couldn’t possibly entertain the idea of giving up my beloved warm hue just because I was getting “wifed up.”

So, let’s get into some basic tips I have that may just possibly make mixing metals work for you too.

  • Balance in Numbers

Whether styling rings, bracelets, necklaces, or earrings, incorporate the same number of each tone. 5 gold rings + 5 silver rings. 2 gold necklaces + 2 silver necklaces. You get the idea… if you don’t, please feel free to email me & we can have a whole fashion-themed “School House Rock” about it.

  • Everything is Better in 3’s (or 4’s)

Instead of just mixing silver & gold, consider incorporating another tone as well, making it even more obvious helps round out the look. Silver, gold, rose gold, copper, antiqued silver or gold, bronze, etc. Mix them all!

  • Unify with Stones

If you have different toned items but they share the same stone those can work magically together. Silver ring & gold bracelet but they both have a turquoise stone? Badda bing, badda boom.

Mixing metals allows me to curate a jewelry look tailored to perfection.  It evokes an effortless style that i think everyone should be attempting to master. I love the personal mashup of hand selected items that says “I only have to match if I want to.” I was inspired to share my love for contrasting tones by my amazing evil eye necklace from Reese Collection Jewelry. With it’s silver rosary style chain & gold trimmed pendant, I have been wearing nothing but mixed metals since I received it.

Hopefully, you’ll now try your hand at this glorious mashup & if you’re in the market for gorgeous jewelry check out the links below. It’s never too late for holiday gifts to yourself.
